Understanding Antisemitism in this Current Moment
Understanding Antisemitism in this Current Moment:
Unpacking the recent manifestations of antisemitism, and how to avoid contributing to violence against the Jewish community
Antisemitic incidents in the US have risen nearly 80% since violence erupted in Israel and Gaza on May 10. 220+ instances of antisemitism have been reported across the country, from synagogues and Jewish-owned stores being vandalized to Jewish people are being beaten and chased on the streets simply for being identifiably Jewish. We have also seen intense antisemitism on social media, ranging from dangerous misinformation campaigns to blatant antisemitism.
Using the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism and its Israel-related examples, we will unpack the antisemitism we have witnessed over the past several weeks. We will examine how and when Israel-related conversations can cross into antisemitism, and offer suggestions on how to responsibly engage in conversations about Israel without perpetrating antisemitism or employing inflammatory rhetoric.
This program is open to all. In order to effectively combat antisemitism, it is imperative that both the Jewish community, and all who consider themselves our allies, understand exactly when Israel-related rhetoric veers into antisemitic territory.
