We are shocked and saddened to hear that the center of a beloved community organization, the Dialogue Institute of Kansas City/Kansas City Raindrop Foundation, was vandalized recently, and that authorities are investigating the vandalism as a possible hate crime. The organization is a hub for the Turkish Muslim community in Kansas City and is a long-standing crucial partner in fostering mutual understanding and interfaith dialogue in our region.
The nature of the vandalism is especially hurtful: perpetrators spray-painted swastikas as well as anarchist symbols and other obscene phrases on the building and ransacked multiple rooms, causing tens of thousands of dollars in property damage. The inclusion of Nazi imagery is particularly appalling. As the Dialogue Institute said in a public statement: “Regardless of the perpetrators’ motivations, the use of Nazi symbolism is intended to provoke, cause conflict and sow the seeds of hate and mistrust in this country. The vandals want to create fear and instability for a group that works hard to foster tolerance and interfaith dialogue in Kansas City.”
JCRB|AJC condemns this act of hate in the strongest possible terms. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our friends in the Muslim community against Islamophobia, xenophobia, and all forms of bigotry. We are grateful that no one was in the building at the time of this awful crime.
We invite you to join us in supporting the Muslim community.
First, the Dialogue Institute is asking us all to unite next Thursday, November 10th, at a demonstration of solidarity. More information is in the flyer below; we hope to see you there.
Second, JCRB|AJC and the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom will be collecting letters and cards of support to be given to the Muslim community at the event.
All are welcome to come by the Jewish Community Campus on Sunday, Nov. 6 between 1-4 pm to write cards with us in the main lobby. You may also drop off your cards in a box in the lobby any time between Wednesday, Nov. 2 and Wednesday, Nov. 9. Or, you may mail your cards to our office: JCRB|AJC, 5801 W. 115th Street Suite 203, Overland Park, KS 66211.
We will continue to share any additional opportunities, so that members of the Jewish community may demonstrate our support in every possible way.
