SCLCGKC
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City (SCLC-GKC) is a community-based affiliate of the national civil rights organization founded by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It focuses on achieving social, economic, and political justice through nonviolent direct action and advocacy, with a strong emphasis on racial equity and community empowerment within the Kansas City area.
The organization is well-known for its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Mass Celebration and its work in honoring local civil rights leaders while addressing contemporary issues such as police accountability and voter rights. Led by President Dr. Vernon P. Howard, Jr., SCLC-GKC serves as a moral and activist voice for the local African American community and other underserved populations.
